The HMD picks up the infrared energy emitted by the object to be measured, such as a steel plate, and thereby detects the passage or presence of the object even in adverse environmental conditions. With the remarkably narrower angle of vision, the HMD provides dramatically improved tracking control for the rolling equipment. The detection by the HMD is not affected by adverse environmental conditions, such as a large amount of vapor or gas generation as well as high temperature. In addition, detection is possible to as low as 200°C, thus even in a process line in which both high and low temperature steel plates pass, one detector of the HMD-3000 series can cover the measurement task without using a CMD for low temperature detection.
